Want is what causes suffering in this world. We want things that we cannot have, will lose, or are inferior to our idea of them. Want clouds the mind, fools the senses. It is one of the most significant barriers to enlightenment. If a monk wants nothing, he will want for nothing.

The temple deserves a better heir than me.

I don't need ambition, Lavi.

For a monk you're kinda self-centered. I was bein' general, in general people need to be ambitious, so wanting isn't all bad.

Not everyone can be a monk, then. Some people aren't meant for ambition, and for them wanting serves no purpose.

Well if you count yourself among that number then you're either worthy of being a monk or you're not meant to be a monk.

...Oh. That is true, but...

Guess all that's left is to figure out who you are.

That's difficult, you know.

A journey to the heart's a difficult journey, I guess a good place to start might be what you see yourself aspiring to be.

It's always been 'monk'. 'Head of the temple'. 'Good friend'.

If you can see yourself being all these things then there's no reason why you can't be a good heir. I mean what's this thing that you want anyway?

So what's wrong with that? I thought monks abstained from sex, not love.

Japanese monks don't even abstain from that. But with me, it's too much to ask. They have their own loves, without myself involved.

So you want them to return your feelings romantically...well I can see how that might affect you, but I don't see how that would affect your being a good heir.

I should be satisfied with what I have.

Well aren't you satisfied with what you have?

Yeah...but love isn't a material thing is it. What's wrong with indulging in that?

It's earthly. It counts.

Guess that depends on whether or not you look at love through a truncated, confining scope. I always figured it was something eternal and more meaningful, not some carnal thing you stick in a box. That's what sex and lust are for.

I believe that love is very important. But it's one of the things in life that can hurt us. It has to be dealt with properly.

It doesn't last eternally. In the end, the records say what the records say, and other people's lives go on.

Whoever said that love would be smooth, it's like the truth. Sometimes it's rewarding sometimes it's painful, but the truth is always right. We like to deceive ourselves though.

Sure it lasts eternally, and I'm not talking about romance or life I'm talking about endurance. What we give to those who come after us, that's eternal.

You don't have to tell me about the value of the truth.
