"I enjoyed myself today," Issei told him, standing at the steps to the temple. "Although taking me to Paris was unnecessary, and I would have been happy anywhere-"

"It wasn't a problem, and I enjoyed it too," Hakuba interrupted. "And everyone should be able to see Paris at least once, it's a beautiful city."

"That's true, but..." Issei smiled in return, and finished, "I would have been happy anywhere if it was with you."

Hakuba blinked, and found himself at a momentary loss for words. So Issei continued. "I'd like to be able to do this again sometime - at your convenience, of course. But now I think I should be going back inside. Unless there's something else I have to say first - err, you're not supposed to kiss at the end of a friendly outing, are you?"

The detective chuckled. "No, not usually. Unless you wanted to?"

That caused a frantic shake of the head and a slight blush. "I was just asking! I don't want to do anything wrong, it's just been a while since I've been on a date - friendly outing! I meant a platonic date, really! S-stop laughing at me like that!"

"You feel nice." Issei snuggled further up against Hakuba's chest. "Really, really nice..."

Hakuba blushed, not sure what to do with an armful of drunk and incredibly affectionate Issei. Normally he would've assumed he was just being friendly, but - 'you feel nice'? How was he supposed to take that? "Thanks, but Issei..."

"Hakuba?" Issei's voice was slightly muffled.

"You really shouldn't be doing things like this - you're going to regret them in the morning, when they won't seem as innocent and you'll be sober. I understand that your judgement's impaired, but-"

"Stop talking and cuddle." With that, Issei closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Hakuba sighed, and resigned himself to staying the night and having an extremely awkward conversation in the morning.

Hakuba blinked and pulled his hand away. "Sorry. Did it hurt?"

"No, nothing of the sort!" Issei squeaked, reddening. "Q-quite the opposite. It's a bit strange, and while of course I trust you, I don't think it's appropriate for us to... um, third base."

"...Wait, what?"

Issei stayed in Hakuba's hospital room long after the others had left. Long enough that he was almost falling asleep in the chair by Hakuba's bedside, but kept shaking himself awake to keep up his conversation with Hakuba.

Hakuba noticed. "You can go home if you want to, Issei. I don't mind."

"But you wanted me to keep you up, right? I don't..." Issei paused to stifle a yawn. "I don't mind. If I end up passing out, I apologize for not being able to fulfill my duty."

"It's all right." Hakuba offered him a weak smile. "I don't want you to injure yourself on my account. I'll be fine now."

Issei's words came out in a tired jumble. "But if I leave then I can't protect you from everything, and I want to, I really do."

Hakuba paused, momentarily lost for words. "...Thanks, Issei. But I really will be all right now."

"I should have realized that she would do this..." Hakuba sighed and knelt to get closer to the rabbit. "Can you speak, Issei?"

Issei tried a few awkward vocalizations, but they came out as unintelligible whimpers rather than whatever he had been intending. He shook his head.

"I thought as much. Don't worry, I'll take care of you." Hakuba petted him gently, causing him to color slightly. "Even like this, you blush at the smallest things? You're cute this way."

That caused Issei's eyes to widen and his face turn bright red.

Hakuba chuckled ruefully. "I'm not going to do anything that would make Akako more upset, but at least you weren't turned into a frog."

"Happy birthday, Hakuba," Issei said, against Hakuba's shoulder. "Did you enjoy the party?"

Hakuba smiled and returned the impromptu hug. "I did, thank you for throwing it. You didn't have to."

"But I - we, rather - wanted to. It's your birthday. You deserve something special for it." Issei turned his head enough to gently kiss Hakuba's lips.

"You were too embarrassed to do that at the party," Hakuba commented with a slight chuckle. "What changed?"

"I wouldn't do that in public! N-not that I'm embarrassed or ashamed of you or anything," Issei corrected quickly, "but it's just not appropriate there. There's plenty of things I'd do with you that I wouldn't do in public."

Laughter from behind him caused both of them to turn to look at Akako, and Issei blushed. "Yes, I know what it sounds like, you don't need to inform me. I-I still mean it!"

"You'll let us take you up on that offer, then, Issei-kun~?" Akako asked, a small smirk playing on her features.

"Of course! I meant it!" Issei huffed, before pausing. "A-assuming he wants to, since it is his birthday and all..."

Hakuba's smile widened. "That sounds wonderful."

And so the night went on.
